What is Grace? It is commonly known as God’s unmerited favor, but there is much more to grace than favor. Let’s explore.

- It is God’s goodwill toward men.   God’s will for man [humanity] centers around His goodness. Because He is good and extends His goodness to all His creation, everyone is a recipient of God’s grace.

– It is God’s loving kindness. Psalms 31:21 states, “Blessed be the Lord: for he hath shewed me his marvellous kindness in a strong city.” Psalms 42:8 states, “Yet the Lord will command His loving-kindness in the daytime, and in the night His song shall be with me, a prayer to the God of my life.” God commands His love and grace in the earth day and night. Ephesians 2: 7, “That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.”

– The initiative God takes to bless us. How blessed we are to know that God takes initiative to grace us. His initiative to grace us and bless us is completely independent of and not the effect of anything that we do or say.

– His act of forgiveness. 1 John 1:9 states, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” God’s act of grace grants us a pardon to our sin.

– It is how God carries out His sovereignty. Matthew 5:45 states, “That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.” Ephesians 1: 5-6 states, “Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.” God sovereignly chose those He would save through His gracious act of sending His Son to die on the cross for their salvation.

– It is the gift from God that saves us. Ephesians 2:5, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.”
