How to Conquer a Scarcity Mindset and Get Unstuck

I've been meditating a lot on the Word, more than usual that is, and I experienced a breakthrough right in my bedroom because the Word is just that powerful. I remember a few years ago I felt like I was struggling more than I ever had in my life. I was being faithful, obedient to the call and yet, still felt like I was living beneath my privileges.

I wondered how does a person experience the abundance and overflow of God's promises in their life when their day-to-day experiences look so different. I couldn't figure out the trigger that was missing from me making this mindset shift. I was very anxious for that trigger to be pulled because I was tired of feeling "less than."

Stuck between "less than" and "more than enough" and the scales in my mind were tilting more towards the former more than the latter.

And just imagine, a leader, faced with leading others to their greater purpose, yet I felt stuck.

To overcome this scarcity mindset that kept me in a place of discontentment, I had to reprogram my mind by redefining what abundance and overflow really meant. I looked to God and His word to clearly define it for me so that I could be released from the paralyzing feelings of "less than" and step into my rightful place of abundance and "more than enough."

Three scriptures that will teach you how to overcome a scarcity mindset, get unstuck, and embrace abundance right where you are

Re-adjust Your Sights - Psalms 37:3-4

Trust in the Lord, and do good; Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

It may go without saying that I was focused on the wrong things.  I couldn’t see the trees for the forest.  I was in desperate pursuit of God’s abundance that I missed out on what was in front of me.  Rather than being anxious for God’s benefits, I needed to develop a heart that pants after God and not the gifts.

To dwell in the lands means that regardless of your circumstances, be content, feed on His faithfulness and take joy in knowing that He is and always is faithful.

You Can Not Be Blessed and Lack at the Same Time - Psalms 84:4a

Blessed are those who dwell in Your house….

If you dwell in the house of God which is wherever the spirit of God dwells and you are in His presence,  then you are blessed, and if you are blessed then you lack nothing. Blessed people are happy people and those who are discontent are not happy, at least on the inside. So if you want to overcome the feeling of scarcity and lack, get into God’s presence where there is strength and infinite riches.

Realign Your Priorities  - Matthew 6:33

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

I used to be very focused on having four and five-figure months in my business.  I felt like if I made a lot of money in my business or if I received one tangible blessing after another, then I was experiencing the overflow of God’ blessing in my life. This scripture lets us know this is not the case.

I had to learn that what I was after was “these things,” nothing but a bunch of things, but God’s Kingdom and His righteousness is not just a thing.  It’s the heart, mind, and characteristics of God.  Everything else is just a thing. Our priorities should not be on “things,” but on God.  He knows what we need before we come to Him. Release your desire for all the things and make God the priority.

Don’t Complain and Be Grateful - 1 Thessalonians 5:18

In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

If it feels like you continually experience lack, the surefire way to reverse your situation is to be grateful.  Before God blesses you with more, be thankful for what you currently have.  He has to trust that your heart is in the right place and is fixed on Him and not on what He can give you.  Express gratitude towards God knowing that He has not forgotten you and that He has plenty in store for you.

Stop Holding Back and Give Generously- Luke 6:38

Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom.

Giving is something that comes naturally for some and must be learned for others.  If what you currently have is the most you want, then keep it, but if you want more than what you have, give generously. This may seem counterintuitive to overcoming a scarcity mindset, but it’s a sure way to position yourself to receive what God has for you.

Scarcity is the fear of not having enough and is a complete lie!  You have everything you need!

When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness to worship Satan, he promised Him that he would give Him the world. The enemy will try to make you believe that you don’t have enough or feel like what you have will be depleted, but when you go to the well that never runs dry there will always be enough.
