This year I have challenged myself and the ladies in my women's ministry to memorize scripture each month for the entire year. It is so important to have the word of God hidden in your heart. If you grew up in the church you may be very familiar with several scriptures in the bible, but usually many people recite what they have heard said by others for many years. God put it on my heart to stretch my mind and those around me to COMMIT! Yes! God wants us to be committed.
Proverbs 16:3 Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established. Just imagine if you commit to learning scripture, whether it's every day, week, or month, the bible says God will establish your thoughts. Your thoughts will be stable, steadfast, made firm, and directed.
God honors commitments, especially when we keep them, and will reward us for our diligence.
One of my favorite authors, John MacArthur, gives insights as to why memorizing scripture is important. He says,
Repetition expands our capability of recall. Recovering spiritual truth demands repetition and use. The more you hear, think through, and apply spiritual truth the more it begins to dominate your thinking. Eventually you will react involuntarily in the proper spiritual manner to any situation because a particular spiritual principle has become so much a part of you.
If you struggle with memorizing things, memorizing scripture is one of the best things you can do to get better at it. You can download my 2015 Scripture Memorization Plan. Commit to it and get your thoughts established.
